Welcome
The BrightLine wiki was created to empower people of color to enforce media respect. It is an archive that records clear and blatant offenses in the media and documents the program and advertisers associated with it. This information is collected and disseminated to the community via blogs, newspapers, radio and person to person, so that the brands that support programs which disrespect people of color can be exposed and held accountable. By establishing clear and well recognized bright lines for media companies and their advertisers which cannot be crossed without risk of serious and sustained damage to their brands, we hope to bring about a sustained improvement in the level of respect demonstrated towards people of color by television, cable, radio and internet broadcast networks.
The presidential campaign of Barack Obama created tremendous excitement and energy among African Americans and among people of color generally. It has also brought to the fore an issue that people of color have grappled with for years; disrespect and racial/ethnic based insults in the media. The insult which inspired this effort was the labeling of Michelle Obama as a "baby mama" in a chryon by Fox News. That incident and many others before it, definitively show that in order to enforce a standard of respect for people of color in the media, we must build and maintain the capability to inflict severe and lasting damage to the brand of any corporation or advertiser which knowingly supports media programming that intentionally insults people of color.
